So the beauty in doing the 365 project was that whenever I felt the urge to write down something, I did. I didn’t wait until I was able to find some quiet. No I would grab the nearest pen and paper/napkin/piece of cardboard I could and begin expressing myself. This morning I woke up with that feeling. Right before I opened my eyes, a poem begin forming itself in my head. I could see the words and how they would flow. I could not wait until I could write it and when I got into work, I began writing down this piece. It is titled, “When I think about Delta”. Enjoy
When I think about Delta, I think about God.
An awesome God who saw that the world needed something a bit more. He in his infinite wisdom saw that the world needed some movers and shakers. He in his majesty and honor saw that the world needed some leaders and motivators. He in his love for the world saw that he needed some women with hearts big and strong enough to share it.
When I think about Delta, I think about 22.
That number was perfect. 22 women from different parts of the nation who came to Howard University. 22 women with different talents. 22 women with different personalities. 22 women with one vision set afire in their hearts: Delta Sigma Theta, a call to something greater.
When I think about Delta, I think about my mentors, play aunts, and cousins.
Who before I could even accept the call myself, they were there carrying the torch. Women who pushed me to excel in all aspects of my life. Women who didn’t need their letters to define them. For they were already set aside as a royal priesthood. Women who in their daily walk embody courage and compassion.
When I think about Delta, I think about my home chapter, Zeta Psi.
A chapter that for 44 years has changed the University of Georgia for the better. A chapter that has fostered and nurtured lawyers, doctors, teachers and authors. A chapter that is known for opening our doors and making everyone who walks through them feel at home. A chapter that teaches those among its ranks lessons that are forever imprinted on our hearts. A chapter that when we say we are “Zeta Psi” it is a badge of honor, humility, and sisterhood that we do not take lightly.
When I think about Delta, I think of my line, DevaSTating Olympians of Fortuity.
44 women. 44 hearts committed to change. 44 spirits joined together for a lifetime. 44 innovative minds that have and continues to break records and amaze all around us. 44 dynamic women who through thick and thin have changed my life for the better. 44 women who teach me daily about love.
When I think about Delta, I think of my neos.
Who now have the torch to carry. Each of them with their own personalities. Each of them with their own talents. Reflections of what God has instilled in them. Reflections of what expectations set before them. Reflections of a Dynasty they hold in their hearts.
When I think about Delta, I think about the alumnae chapters that have opened their arms to me.
Chapter presidents who have called on me to serve because they wanted me to enhance my leadership. Sorors who give advice anytime you need it. Sorors who support when you try and be strong by yourself and they are there to catch you. Sorors who share their time to make sure we are all the best women we are supposed to be.
When I think about Delta, I think about the future.
I see 101 more years of inspiring.
I see 101 more years of surviving.
I see 101 more years of leading.
I see 101 more years of impacting.
I see 101 more years of serving.
I think of all of this and more.
My heart overflows with the love and passion igniting from the moment I knew that Delta was the one and only thing for me. From the moment I was chosen to be a part of this organization. From the moment I took my first step onto those burning sands. From the moment I yelled with all my heart and soul, “I will forever be known as Proverb!”. From the moment I joined my voice with thousand of sorors singing and celebrating 100 years under Lady Fortitude.
When I think about Delta, I can’t just think about the letters, the call, the pyramid, the strolls, or the stepping.
No it’s bigger than that.
It’s Delta Sigma Theta with all of my love, peace and happiness.
