A few months ago I was scrolling down my Facebook timeline and saw an announcement for the 2nd Annual Classic City Fringe Festival.  I decided to apply and bring the 365 project one woman show there and in September I found that I am among an amazing slate of fringe artists.  The 365 Project One Woman Show will have FOUR performances in the festival! This is an opportunity for me to hone in the show and try it out on different audiences.

The wonderful folks over at the Classic City Fringe decided to ask each artist a few questions. I really thought they were good questions and wanted to share them here:

7 FRINGE PERFORMER QUESTIONS:
– Why do you identify as a “fringe” artist?

I identify as a fringe artist simply because I love to infuse different elements of art together. I have always done poetry and spoken word, but also majored in theatre. Within fringe, these worlds can exist in a wonderful way.

– What big goal do you hope to accomplish in the next 5 years?
I would love to do an official tour of my one woman show.

– How do events like the Fringe Festival help you as a fringe artist/performer?
These events give me a chance to get a sense of what material is working for different audiences. I think it also helps me to connect with other like minded artists who are there to support and encourage you to excel in your art. This is my first year and the community of artists in this festival have been so encouraging.

– How is an event like the Fringe Festival good for the community?
Fringe festivals bring people together from different backgrounds and exposes people to different types of artistic expression. I feel like any space where artistic expression is present, there is healing, there is peace, there is laughter and there is fun.

– What Inspires you?
The people around me inspire me. I have some awesome people in my tribe (family and friends) who encourage me, pray for me and participate in my random adventures day by day. It is in the conversations we have and memories we create that provides me with inspiration everyday.

-What lead you to choose to perform the piece you will be doing?
I began creating the one woman show earlier this year which is an extension of my book The 365 Project: The Year of Getting Back to Me. I am constantly trying to improve this piece and I hope that in this festival, I can make it better.

-What was your first experience being a performer?
Well I have been performing since I was 3 years old. I don’t have exact memories of the very first performance but I do remember reciting the poem Don’t Quit as a child. It was a great experience. The poem itself resonates so much about going for what you want in life and not making excuses. With each performance of that poem, I was able to find more things to relate to.
